What Congress needs to know about drone airspace integration

Later this summer, congressional aviation staff are expected to begin initial discussions on a reauthorization of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which is due at the end of Sept. 2023. One topic that Congress will consider is the integration of drones into the National Airspace System. This is a long-term effort that will require overcoming numerous technical and policy challenges, many of which cannot be addressed in time for next year’s FAA reauthorization.
